How to Clear Your Local DNS Cache

When domain DNS records change, your computer's operating system stores old IP mappings in its local resolver cache. Follow these instructions for your operating system to clear stale cached records immediately:

Microsoft Windows (10 / 11 / Server)

Press the Windows Key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator. Then enter the following command and press Enter:

ipconfig /flushdns

Expected output: "Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache."

Apple macOS (Sonoma, Ventura, Monterey)

Open Terminal (via Spotlight or Applications > Utilities) and execute the following command, entering your administrator password when prompted:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Linux (Ubuntu / Debian / systemd)

Open a terminal shell and run the systemd resolver flush utility:

sudo systemd-resolve --flush-caches

For distributions utilizing nscd: sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart

Google Chrome & Microsoft Edge Internal Cache

Modern Chromium browsers maintain an internal socket and host resolver cache independent of the operating system. In your browser's address bar, navigate to:

chrome://net-internals/#dns

Click the "Clear host cache" button, then navigate to chrome://net-internals/#sockets and click "Flush socket pools".
